57 Fairlane, 3 on the tree:
shifting hangs up between first and second, sometimes between 2nd and 3rd. The rods look like they bang into each other. Not sure if they are slightly bent or just worn out. Any suggestions would be appreciated on a fix. Also, if anyone can post a video of how they are supposed to look and operate, that would be greatly be appreciated! thanks,Mark

I think you just need to replace the bushings where the rods attach to the levers at the bottom of the column and adjust the rods.thusly:
1.Put the trans in neutral.
2. Remove the cotter pins, flat washers and wavy (spring) washers from the shift rod ends and pull the levers out of the bushings.
3. Replace the bushings.
4. Rotate the clevises as needed to place the shift levers in the same plane when the rod ends are attached to the levers (this is where it gets fiddly). Reinstall the rod ends, washers and cotter pins.
5. Bob's your uncle, enjoy.
If you do the adjustment correctly the lever at the steering wheel will be horizontal with the trans in neutral.
You can also add some thin flat washers at the transmission end of the rods. There's usually some slop there.

OK then, your problem may be internal. The attached article may give some guidance: http://www.fordification.com/tech/3spd-column_01.htm
