Does anyone have a source for new gears. I need a new ring and pinion for my 56 Club Sedan.

Does this style rear end have a crush sleeve on the pinion?

Also what size is the ring gear 8" 8.8" ??

Thanks for the help!

Jim

Check with the suppliers of parts - Concours, Larry's etc. Hemmings might be a good source. If it were me, I would change to a later 8 or 9 inch rear. The 57-59's (9 inch) are the same length as the 56, spring pads are in the same place - they are a bolt in. Same with the 65/66 Mustang. All kinds of gear selections in the aftermarket.

Jim - There is a thread titled "Posi for pre '57 (9 inch) Ford Vehicles" - about March 1 of this year. It suggests that you may have an answer available by talking to Reider Racing. I know that Reider has helped quite a few people with all sorts of rear axle difficulties on a variety of vehicles.

There were two different rear ends in the ’56 with one being the Ford dropout and the other being the rear loading Spicer.  The Spicer was the heavy duty option for which I’m told that new gears are still readily available.

Jim.  Can you downsize your signature picture to 600 wide or less?  This will fix the problem of the text scrolling off of the right side of the screen.  Signature pictures being downsized to 200 or less will also permit the posts to come up quicker for those of us that are on dialup.  If you need help in doing this, just give a shout.  Photobucket does have downsizing capability so you can do it from there.

Jim.  I’ve downsized your signature picture and reloaded it.  You should be able to save this one to your Photoshop account and do more with it if so desired.

IF YOUR REAR IS THE SAME TYPE AS ME (55-BIRD), IT'S A DANA 44 WITH FORD 'ENDS'. REIDER RACING HAS A POSI FOR THIS (I BOUGHT ONE FOR ME) AND MOST LIKELY GEARS ,TOO. CALL THEM AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE. 1957 IS THE FIRST YEAR FOR THE FORD NINE INCH- YOU CAN GO WITH THAT, TOO IF YOU WANT.

OH, I FORGOT- DANA 44'S DO NOT HAVE A 'CRUSH SLEEVE' . YOU VARY THE SHIMS ACCORDINGLY AND TIGHTEN THE PINION NUT TO 190 FT. LBS. AND THEN TAKE A READING BY TURNING THE DRIVE SHAFT YOKE WITH A SOCKET ON THE PINION NUT- WITH A INCH LB TORQUE WRENCH. NOTE THE READING-NEW GEARS SHOULD HAVE AROUND 15 TO 20 IN. LBS. 'PRELOAD' - IF READING IS TOO BIG- TAKE APART AND INCREASE SHIM- IF READING TOO SMALL- DECREASE SHIM THICKNESS. TRY AGAIN-AND AGAIN UNTIL READINGS COME OUT RIGHT. WITH NEW GEARS YOU MAKE THE READINGS A TAD 'TIGHT'- WHEN THE GEARS 'SEAT' AND THE NEW BEARINGS AND RACES BED IN, THE READINGS WILL 'LOOSEN UP' TO AROUND 30 TO 35 IN. LBS. - JUST RIGHT. IF 'FRESHING UP' GOOD USED, GEARS, (THIS CAN BE DONE JUST NICELY) MAKE THE READINGS AT 30 TO 35. (15-20 FOR THE RING- 15-20 FOR THE PINION)
