Transmission has been working fine. Drove it yesterday and pull it in low, shift to second, back in low shift to high at 6200 as I always have done for the last 20 years. 312 warmed up a bit with mummert parts. Well today get in the car and second gear has left the building!!?? Fluid is clean and I don't have a clue. I am mechanic by trade but never seen one do this. We are in Texas fighting the storm and I work for the county and will be busy for the next few months. Just looking for some suggestions. I have a lift and can have it out in 15 minutes but before I do i figured I wud ask for help from the best!! Thanks!!

Thanks for the reply, I figured as much. just puzzling because 3rd is fine and only second wont pull. I do everything but automatics but ill pull it and go through it. my neighbor is the local transmission guru and said there is no reason i cant handle it on my own. so if all of my cars dont flood ill try after this storm!

Sorry for asking MVP56, but you said you "drove" it yesterday, put it in low, and ran up to 6200, Is this your normal driving? Was everything warmed up? Sounds like you were drag racing someone.
Every week end when I drive mine at least one time i will start in low to make sure all is working correctly always bringing it back in low to hold second and at least put is in low to go up my drive when coming home.
Not saying anything bad, just wondering?

sorry! maybe i worded it wrong!! it was warm and like you i always run it hard at least once before i put her up for the evening. same shifting pattern like you described! however, these are not my normal driving habits but when i do run them that way its all or nothing! its a 54 skyliner and has built a pretty good reputation for herself...... the local scrub guys look the other way when shes prowling the streets!!!!!!

Greetings to all: Sounds like a broken intermediate band as that component is only common to 2nd gear.  Stay safe and wishing you the best down there in Texas,    JEFF..................

Thanks for the replies and concern about the flood! Like i said I work for the county and we have been working like crazy! To all of you who are reading this post please evacuate whenever it is mandatory in any situation. Its the people that ignore it and stay. Well, they end up flooded in or whatever the case may be and it puts others lives in danger who are responsible for rescuing them. I don't know why they ignore it!? We have been in situations where children were stranded with their parents. Well kids come first and just so you know, a refrigerator makes a great boat! Just pull off the doors, out with the food and in with the kids! Really, thanks guys! It's bad but is going to get worse when the Brazos river comes out of its banks. Predicted to and will be the worst flood in our area on record... And yes my engine is ok! It's a Y-block! It's built for it and I don't always run her like that. Thanks for the info on 2nd gear band. Makes sense now. Just shows the strength of the Fordomatic. It has a lot of rotating mass and is a power robber but they can take a lot of punishment! Thanks again! MVP56 over and out!

I think the concern expressed was for your engine.. The stock valve train was designed for about 5400 RPM max.. Running it too 6200 is pushing your luck. At the least you could have a pushrod failure, at worst a dropped valve!!  You need up graded valve train parts if your going to go to use it like that!  Above 5400 your likely getting some valve train float.
..A place to start might be Schumann Sales in Iowa. They  used to list Police service valve train parts.
