Did a search and did not find an answer to my question. For some reason the back edge of my damper is rubbing slightly on the stready rest. Unknown why this is happening but I had the pan off 4 years ago but not rest and have not had any problem since. I'd like to remove it bu it says the damper needs to come off remove it. Is this true?
 Both side motor mounts are in excellant shape so I don't know what happened. I have not driven the car since I heard the noise as I don't want the damper ring to get hop and ruin it.

Do I need it? The Ford factory manual states it hold no engine weight. What are some of the opinion here on the sight..Thanks

The damping mass of your damper is probably coming off, which means it is probably time to replace the damper.  Aside from that, make sure all bolts are tight and nothing has bent.

On trucks, at least one of the bolts cannot be removed with the damper in place.  Might be the same on the car.

Many people do remove the steady rest and leave it off.

Turns out the problem was probably more my fault. 4 yrs ago I needed to remove the pan. I removed the 2 cap screws that held the pan on and the steady rest in place. I did not replace the nuts or the longer bolts when finished and there was no problem. I would be suprised that during the trans up grade they lifted the rear higher and "bent" the rest up in front a bit bringing the harmonic balencer close to the mount.
I fixed it by getting 2longer cap screws (full threaded) pointed them with a grinder and installing them pulling the steady rest back where it belongs. I should have thought of it when it was hard to get the belts off or on as the steady rest was close to the pulleys. A good lesson learned.
