Well,

I've removed the piston from the cylinder and this is what I found.

I have not yet found this missing piece.

So...  I'm going to need new pistons.  I would like to keep forged pistons but flat tops seem to be unobtanium off of the shelf.  It seems that the pistons will have to be custom.  I am now considering throwing in a 312 crank.  I have C2AE rods prepped.  So I can have the pin height set to work with the 292 rods and 312 crank.  We'll see.  It's more than I was hoping to have to spend but it would be pretty cool.

Been there, done that. I had damage on both sides as the loose retainer broke up and passed thru the pin.  It got the wall on both sides of the piston.  A sleeve was the cure for mine, it was installed and bored .40 over to match the rest of the cylinders.  Funny thing is the engine ran well with the deep scores in the cylinder walls.

Also found a cracked head with a coolant leak under the rocker shaft.

Runs nice now, love the sound

If you can find a forged piston that is similar and is domed, you can mill off the dome and make it a flat top. Just make sure the deck of the piston is thick enough, and the dome is not hollow. after milling, check the weight of the piston. You want it to be the same as the others.

You know, I'm going to inquire about the 318 kit. I just did the math and it seems that the 318 kit will cost less than the work and parts that I am planning.

The rest of the clip is still in the piston.
