         Liability is usually the basic requirement, they want to be sure you're covering the other driver, or phone pole, whatever.

Legal requirement in Texas is liability.  If the car is financed, the lender usually requires comprehensive with them made out as the beneficiary as part of the contract.Grundy, Hagerty and JC Taylor all offer a plan that will suit your needs IF they will insure non US drivers.

The old car specialists have a declared value policy that includes all the basics you need here. They allow up to a given amount ($15000- $20000 Maybe more now) of value without an apprasial. They will pay that amount in case of a total lose or theft with no reduction. Since its for special interest vehicles they are quite reasonable compared to other US insurance companys. Thanks Chuck& Doug .Already tried my insurance company here in Oz.No luck ! I will e-mail Grundy to see what the deal is .What insurance do I have to have ( by LAW ) to drive a car on the road in USA  ??? Here in Australia you must have compulsery third party before you can get a car registered .Next level is a third party fire & theft policy ( Covers the other guys car ).Next level is "Full Comprehensive " ( Covers everything )

You can get insurance for collector cars here in USA from Haggerty or Grundy.  These are agreed value policies for special interest cars and will also include proper liability coverage if you ask for it.   Grundy  is called "Grundy Worldwide" their Web site is WWW.Grundy.com phone # 215 674 1856 in Horsham Pa,  Check their web sit and call them, tell them what you intend to do,  and see if they can help. One thng to know about insurance Cos is that they record everything you say so don't try to B S them,  but of course no Aussy would ever do that!

Have you contacted your current insurance company? Ask them about extending the policy to tempory coverage in the states. When we used to go to Mexico we could get coverage on our existing policy for the trip. At a fee of course. You may be suprised at what your companies can offer. Hope this helps. Chuck in NH

Ted,thanks for the reply .Insurance on rental cars is fine ,thats all covered through the travel agent .I'm talking buying a car in USA ( along with a clear title )& driving it around .???Don't want to end up in trouble with the local sheriff or the county jail ???

Hi Lon.  The company I worked for always had me decline the insurance that was provided by the rental car company but for an individual rental and especially being from overseas, I’d suspect you’d be best covered with the supplemental policy provided by the rental car company.  I’d suggest just contacting Hertz or Avis and discussing this with them in detail before making your trip to insure having the coverage you need if you’re only talking rental.  As far as getting a temporary policy for a car you’re thinking of purchasing, I’m in the dark on that one and will suggest you contact insurance companies for more information.

Although not entirely Y related ,I need to know how a non-U.S citizen ( Aussies ) can get insurance in good ol' USA ?? Darryl & Jayson are looking at buying a 56 or 57 Thunderbird ,Brad & I will be looking at 61 to 65 Thunderbirds when we come there in August .I've been told it is not a good idea to get caught driving  or have an accident without  insurance ?? Also been told I cannot get insurance as I am not a US resident ??How true is this ??
