Yes my manual also stated that its no replacable but it is.Wink  It took some work to figure it out but for $8 you can get a spring from Midwest early ford.  Took me about 30 mins to get the drive to come loose and another 30min to get the C clips off.  1 hour to reassemble and install and once again the Y-block purrs like a wet kitten!!

1.  If you compress the spring there is a rod that holds the drive on the shaft.  Remove that and the drive comes off.

2.  There is a C clip that holds the spring shaft into the drive piece that will need removed. 

3.  The next C clip is on opposite end of the spring.  You will need to compress the end to remove it.

4.  The last C clip is at the end of the the spring and will also need to be compressed to remove.

Hope this helps others and will save you some money in the future.

I had a look at the chassis parts and acc catalog and it's just one part.



I will say back when I was a teenager I remember doing a little brazing on mine to "fix" it. I can't remember if the spring broke or if it was the spring 'holder' or not.



I wouldn't do it now though. Even NAPA can get the starter drive for a Y-block. I recently bought a reman starter from National Auto Parts in Puyallup, Wa for $49 (exch) no drive though. With the drive it was about $100... When I went to a local starter/gen rebuilder he told me couldn't do it that cheap even for the parts!



There's always a starter on ebay for sale. (Now that I have my Bendtsen adapter I have to use a geared starter....so no more Y-block starters for me!!......I am probably going to hate the sound of that geared starter!!!)

Hello there,I just checked my 56 Ford shop manual because I assume the starters are the same.Manual says drives only serviced as an assembly!Not meant to be repaired if the spring breaks I guess.Change the whole drive assembly.Just my 2-cents worth.Regards Mark

Can anybody tell me how to get the drive assembly spring off a 56 F100 starter?  I have the drive assembly off the starter shaft but can not figure how to replace the spring.  It always nice when a $8 part breaks keeps you from starting.  Good thing for a 3 on the tree and a friendly push!
