Looking for new Edelbrock 4-V carburetor model number recommendations to put on my (bored-to-297) 292 with ECZ-G heads and ECZ-B iron intake, with '57 factory "high-lift" [312] cam.

Thanks, JLB

No specific recommendation.  Get one with adjustable vacuum secondaries.  I had the non adjustable one, 1405 and it had a tuning issue, that I believe had to do with the secondaries because I tried adjusting anything else that could be adjusted with no success.   I know it was a problem related to the carburetor because I eventually changed to a Holley 570 and that was running better in only a few hours than I ever got the Edelbrock to run in a combined days or possibly weeks of trying to get it to work.

Here's the carburetor you want.    I have the same intake and I love mine.  Bolt it on and forget it.

Im running a 1406 on mine currently, with slightly richer needles  [292 / auto] .  Its as good as anything Ive tried.  Whatever you choose you might have to tickle it a little to get it perfect.

Florida.. I've mentioned this 465CFM Holley before here and also feel it's a great carb for many of our Y-blocks. The Summit 600 is another one. Too many folks buy high performance carbs when a smaller or real street may be really for them. I understand this Holley is popular with rack crawler type vehicles where torque is more important than hp.

I swapped out the Summit 600 on my engine for a Quick Fuel 600. I'm much happier with the engines performance.

My Thunderbird is a street car.  I want it to run well under those conditions.  I have had many cars in the past with big carbs and cams.  They run like crap until you get to 4,000 RPM.  Unfortunately, you can't do that on our streets these days.  A 292 is not a 427.   It's a small motor that needs a small carb. If more people understood that, they would have better running Y blocks.

I agree, I only run a Holley 390 on my street Y.

Folks, many sincere thanks for the replies so far.  I'm really interested specifically in the Edelbrock [500 - 600 CFM - Adjustable Vacuum Secondaries (AVS)] line with manual choke only - in interest of easier "tuning".  I'm really not familiar with any of the newer carburetor setups for this application ['55 Ford Crown]. Old School was Carter AFB on this manifold - originally came off a '57 Mercury wagon 312 "back in the day".

How do these newer design carb's fit "across" on the manifold between valve covers?  I'm concerned by the various photos about side clearances, throttle linkage, and "kick-down" linkage to the Fordomatic.

Also, block's been decked 0.080" each side, which makes for a very close manifold to valley cover issue [very close to interference], any additional suggestions to relieve that issue?

Any more specific information will be very much appreciated.

Regards, JLB

Plenty of room for the carb, between the valve covers.

You shouldn't have an issue with a stock valley cover.  You might with aftermarket covers.   If you have interference, you'll need to see where it is and hammer or grind or modify as necessary.
