My '55 BW 259 OD trans has two fill plugs, one on the gearbox, and one (slightly higher) on the OD unit. The shop manual says to fill through the gearbox only. (I wonder why they put a fill plug in the OD unit if they didn't want you to use it!) Anyway, I usually fill the trans quickly until the lube runs back out the hole, but last time I was interupted and discovered that if you wait long enough for the lube to run into the OD, the trans will hold more.
But, I have noticed lately that when stuck in traffic on a hot day the clutch chatters/grabs, and I see lube has been foaming out the breather valve on top of the gearbox, near the bellhousing. I guess I should jack the car up level with the trans hot and pull the gearbox fill plug to see how much excess if have. But for future reference, does anyone out there know what the proper fill-procedure/levels should be? Will my clutch problem likely clear up by itself, or will I have to change/clean the disc?
P.S. Any other MAC people out there having trouble with the Forum software? I'm buttuming it's PC based (insrutable).
