I picked up a running 2 bbl 272 out of a 55 that I think is original to the car put in my 55,my 55 originally had a 4 bbl version that I am going to duplicate but with a 57 4 bbl intake and 62 distributor and from what I have found there are different head casting numbers for a 2 bbl and 4 bbl so does the 4 bbl heads have a smaller combustion chamber or is there different pistons too. I presume this 272 has the original 2 bbl heads and can get a set of the 4 bbl heads so will that all I need to raise the compression to the 55 4 bbl specs,I do have a set of 62 heads that are supposed to have a slightly higher compression (8.8 vs the 55 at. 8.5) but has smaller intake valves.

Can't answwer your questions, but "link" from this site to John Mummert's site.. Then go to his Cylinder Head I.D' s section. You'll likely find what your looking for there..

Here is an excerpt from MUMMERTS chart regarding the 1955 272CI -

The 1955-57 272 used the same piston.

Maybe ID both sets of heads (CASTING ID NO - DATE CODE - FOUNDRY MARK) to see what you have?
