Sadly now my engine is back in the car, my supposed air cleaner has been found to be too big.

I have gone to the trouble of painting the one I bought off eBay. Sadly it is too big and the bonnet (hood) opening mechanism fouls it making it a bad fit.

It was a 1958 air cleaner, but I assumed it would fit the 1959 model Mercury. Apparently not. w00t

Does anyone have the correct original? I don't mind some restoration work on an untidy one.

I don't want a chrome fancy one.

Picture taken in 1960. Funnily enough it still looks like this! BigGrin

Carl.

Thanks for the reply.

Could you measure from the centre of the hole where the carb fits to the rear of the cleaner please?

Because my hood flips forward (stupid design) the air cleaner if too big will hit the hood lock mechanism.

Thanks mate! BigGrin

Oh I also need a correct Y block oil filler cap. I'm told mine is wrong.

Paul,

If you're looking for the dome top oil fill cap, you can get a brand new one at "Tee-Bird Products" in Exton, PA, USA.

$19.95 for the Black one and $28.35 for Chrome.

Paul, what are your plans for the car? Drive and enjoy it, or have someone tell you what parts are not correct etc. etc. etc.? I prefer the driving side. Once you choose to be judged by the "experts" they will always be able to find something not factory correct (in their opinion) about your car. Just my 2 bits! Your car is beautiful and you've done it yourself! That should be enough. Chuck in NH

Guess you are right Chuck.

Just looked at Tee-Birds website (thanks A.J). The oil filler cap for a 57 T-Bird is identical to mine.

Paul,

I've gotta agree with Chuck, the "experts" on the show circuit will drive you nuts.  Some folks are into that though.  My goal for my 55's is to make them look like they would have if they'd been slightly hot rodded by a young guy in the early 60s.  Sort of a poor man's "American Graffitti."  Whatever your tastes...HAVE FUN!!  BigGrin  Anyway, you'll love the guys at Tee-Bird.  They are a small family run business and they are very friendly and helpful.  They've managed to get quite a bit of my income over the last few years!!  While they deal primarily with 55 thru 57 Fords, a lot of the parts should be interchangable for your needs.

Good Luck

My comment about "comrade Paul's" oil cap wasn't about appearances! His engine was full of sludge when he opened it up. Y-blocks, at least the earlier ones, used a larger diameter cap than he has, & thats the only avenue for air into the crankcase. In fact the earliest ones also had an air deflector "That" is why I suggested he get a larger one..

The judging comments were not targeted an anyone on the forum. Just my general observation. Anyone can run anything they want on their engine as long as its a Y!Smile Thats the way I like it! Chuck in NH
