I believe 57 and later merc 312 engines were green.

The Mercury’s also had front sump oil pans. The trucks and Thunderbirds were rear sumped. But all this was easily changed as the engines became swapped out over the course of time. Some of my 312 finds came from trucks but these engines were originally out of the cars.

56 mercury valve covers had mercury embossed in the covers.

so did 56 312's in a Merc have "mercury" valve covers or just the Thunderbird Special decal?
i'm still thinking my loose 312 came from a Fairlane as it has a front sump pan.
