It actually depends on which oil pan you use.  For the front sump passenger car oil pan use a dip stick tube in the timing cover.  There may be just one dip stick tube for this application. 

T birds and trucks use an oil pan with the sump in the rear and for them you use the hole in the block.  Trucks and T birds use different dip sticks and dip stick tubes.

kind of a dumb question i guess. but while looking at my short block i noticed it had a hole mid way down the block on passenger side for dipstick tube and another hole in the timing cover for a tube.

i've seen pics of tubes in either hole. does it matter which one i use if i dont have a car for this engine yet?

is there a special plug for the hole not used? or can i just use an aluminum dowel?
