lots of owners have removed it without any problems.  However, I left mine on when I installed a 312 in my 54 Ford.  Just wanted the extra stability.

They are not necessary. Ford quit using them in 57.

I removed mine when upgrading the transmission 5 years ago. I still have the factory shields.
