I have a 2007 truck and a 2008 car, and they both use spin on filters.  I always go for Motorcraft, Purolator or a filter with an anti drain back valve, especially with OHC applictions.  However, I sure miss the replacement fuel filter cartridges, like the one that was on my 62 Ford 406.

I doubt seriously that we’ll see a big movement in individuals or shops switching from the spin on filters back to the cartridge style.  The car manufacturers will be another story depending upon what ‘spin’ the government regulations lean towards.  For those actually doing the oil changes, the spills created in changing out a cartridge filter as well as the potential for leaks when reassembling them are reasons enough for not using cartridge filters.

I believe there is pressure from environmental and recycling groups to have manufacturers return to canister and element as opposed to spin on cans as it easier to correctly press, dispose of and recylce elements rather than spin ons. Back to the future again...

I would think it would be cheaper for the filter maker to produce the replaceable filter. No can? Lighter weight to ship. easier production. But what do i know. Most people buy bottled water too.

I see people switching from replaceable element oil filter to spin on can filters on the older engines, because of filter availability? now that I see most new cars come with replaceable elements again, do you think people are going to switch back? for a better peace of mine of knowing exactly what the "filter" looks like?
