I recently took my distributor out, put it on the machine and set the dwell to 28deg. Now when driving I get pinging during acceleration. I've moved the timing from 12 deg advance to several lower setting but it dosen't change. Still pings! Any Ideas? Maybe just some low octane gas? Chuck in NH

Chuck: I assume it didn't ping before you R&R'd the distributor. Did you change the gas while the distributor was out? If not, it isn't the gas. Did you mess with the advance curve while the distributor was on your new machine? Only other thing I can think of is a slipped damper ring so the timing marks are lying to you. John

John, In all the years and combinations I've had in the Vicky I never heard a ping. I know thats odd since I haven't been real choosy about fuel. I didn't make any changes to the advance curve and the damper appears to be dead on. The dampner was a NOS unit and looks good. I'll try timing without the light and see what I get. I did fill up with fuel on the way home before the distributor came out. The idle is a steady and vacume is 16lbs at about 850RPM but the Holley 600 idle circuits are screwed almost all the way in. Maybe 1/2 turn out. Usually required 2.5 turns to idle correctly. It had burnt points in it and was making the car very hard to start. I also had to put a new solenoid on due to over cranking. I don't know why but I always seem to get the wierd puzzles! Chuck in NH

Did the vacuum change since adjusting the dwell? Maybe it now has more vacuum advance.

The distributor is a Mallory single point with mechanical advance only. I didn't make any internal adjustments to it. On the machine it showed 18deg maximum advance. The only thing I did was clean up the points and set the dwell. I did put a squirt of oil in while I was at it. When I started it today I noticed a little putt(?) occasionaly out of the right bank. I'll triple check the wires. Aren't their a couple that could be swapped with minimum affect? I'm also concerned about the change in the carb vacume adjustment. I used to have them about 2.5 to 3 turns out. Now only about 1/2 turn. Vacume is at 16 and smooth. Previously it hung around 14. Throttle plate appears to close properly. Chuck in NH

Chuck - Are you talking about 18° distributor advance - or advance at the crank?

Chuck, I assume you are setting the initial timing @ 12 BTDC and the distributor has 18 degrees of mechanical advance. When you had the distributor on the machine at what RPM was all of the advance in by?

Perhaps lubing it has made it so that the advance comes in faster - less friction to fight with.

18deg at the distributor. I didn't make a note of the exact rpm when it all came in. Seems like 2500-3000rpm. Same dizzy didn't ping before. Chuck in NH

Chuck - You must have had something stuck before? The mechanical advance could have been hanging up or something. Or very low initial advance setting. 18° (distributor) x 2 = 36° at the crank + 12° initial = 48°.....which is a bit too much - needs to be 36°/38° total 2500 -3000 rpm crank revs or distributor revs? this would be OK for crank revs a typical curve is: 10°/12° initial + 26° (13° distributor) all in at 2500 rpm (crank)
