Sometimes cheap isnt so cheap, especially when everthing needs be redone again a few thousand miles later.  Sorry but I am pessimistic.  You might ask qiestions like what pistons are used, are they all the same size, have the rod end been resized and rebushed, range of installed spring heights, what is the main and rod bearing tolerances, head Id, new or reground camshaft and lifters, new or stock valve springs, and so on.  There are many ways of shortchanging a buyer.

Today I went in to the shop to pick up a set of rods I bought on ebay.  they looked good, clean, apparently new bushings and resized big ends.  The shop was to verify the bushing fitting and big end size.  Neither were right.   The rods are basically cores.  These or worse could be in that rebuilt motor you are considering.  The shop owner told me that more often than not when he checks resized rods they are not correct.  In my case there was a .001 taper from center to outside, and bushings had not been replaced but only had a hone run through them to look like it.

Kind of posted a similar question about the same machine shop in spokane wash. I think the name  is S&S Rebuilt auto engines. There are a few different internet links to the same machine shop. 7yr/70k or from the site you saw 7yr/100k(hyperformance). They(after speaking with on phone) do allow many custom upgrades but it seems the basic price is for oem specs or better.

above is link to basic rebuild. I'm looking at shipping these guys my 292. Is there any reason i should not. A local rebuild will cost me $600 more for what seems to be the same thing but my local machinist is not giving me a warranty like this. (1 yr maybe)

seems these guys cover it all. what do you think? thanks bb

Charleston SC Rebuild and round trip ship is $1850. $2400 for a local machinist with not much warranty.

If you send it out of town you have NO idea what they did to it inside. It could be guaranteed for life and I would be still worried about it. Go to the local Ford dealership and ask them for a good mechanic.

yeah, it's perdy expensive..i mean heck, from ford-y-block.com a rebuild kit is like the same price as buyin it from the guys in washington..it would make sense..if they buy in bulk etc etc, of course it would be cheaper for them...but..i wonder if they're just re-ringing or what-not...being i'm not gonna be riding her hard..i mean..come-on, only be like 220bhp..lol.... i just love the sound...at the same time, if i get someone to rebuild mine..it's #s matchin ;-)...

then again...you are right...you don't know what they put in it, unless i disassmbel it all..and what's the pint in that right..lol

actually it's a 2 year warranty where they'll replace it...the next 5 years they'll sell u another at 1/2 price so....i'm really considering it....

I would get it done locally to avoid any hassle with long distance shipping.  I'll bet replacement requires that you cover shipping both ways.  That right there is probably $1000.00.  Plus it's always good to keep the local guy in business.

What does the fine print say?

Alabama being a lot closer to SC than Washington, I would at least look at Glen Henderson's post in Classifieds section and contact him about rebuilders w/ Y experience who are a lot closer than WA.
