I went over the carb and found the following numbers ;

"521" on top of the accelerator pump housing

"S3"  on the main body by one of the secondary venturis

"12R1253B" by one of the primary venturis

Looking at some of the teapots I have sitting here, the number in question can be found on on the passenger side front corner of the fuel bowl cover (top).  These numbers can be very lightly stamped which makes them difficult to see without some thorough cleaning.  Here's a couple of pics.

Ted,

In your reply you refer to a 292 in 55 Fords.  Did any of the full size cars come out with 292's?  I always thought only T-Birds and Merc's used 292's in 55.

As Gary mentioned, the 292's were a special order for the full size '55 Ford cars.  Orders typically had to go through law enforcement or government agencies.  I did have a '55 2 door Mainline that was a P code and had the 2" dual exhaust along with some novelty factory options but it was originally a state government vehicle when new.  When cleaning up the doors, evidence of the old state agency door badges were there.  I do still have the frame for that car sitting here but the body went to Florida to be used as a pattern for a '55 Ford fiberglass body mold.  As there wasn't a stitch of chrome trim on the body, it was quite desirable for that.

The police packages and special orders with the P code in 1955 had the 292 4v in the fords.  All the Mercs had 292s.In 1956 the P code stood for the 312s in fords and all the Mercs in 56 had 312s as well.

Thanks Ted, the ECJ has list #998-1 and the ECK has list # 1074. About the only thing I understand from that without a book is that the ECJ is an earlier carb than the ECK. Pete

The 998-1 shows to be original equipment on a '55 Thunderbird with the 292 engine and the full P/N was ECJ-9510-D.  The 1074 shows to be off of a '55 Ford & Merc with the 292 with the P/N for this one, providing there wasn't a suffix after the list number, being ECK-9510-H.  Unfortunately the book showing these list numbers isn't detailed on the specific carburetor differences.  The differences are likely minor and could be more related to either slight timing advance differences or could be as simple as an automatic transmission calibrated carb versus one for a standard shift transmission.

If you'll look at the main body cover (top), there should be a stamped number such as 25, ,28, 30, 30A, 33, 33A, etc.  These numbers are typically pretty small and sometimes difficult to read or makeout.  Based on these numbers, I may be able to nail down some production dates and possibly if it was a standard or automatic transmission equipped carb.

Any light that you can shed on the subject will be appreciated. I want to rebuild the ECK and keep it as a back up for the car but don't want to spend the $$ for the kit if the carb is different, externally they appear to be identical

What are the list numbers?  These will be next to the Ford part numbers at back of the carbs on the base.  The list numbers may not be able to quantify the exact differences in the carbs but will pinpoint the application a little better in my own books.

Just purchased a spare tea pot carb for my bird off ebay. The original carb for the car is an ECJ 9510 the carb I just purchased off ebay is an ECK 9510. There is no difference between the two that I can see , anybody have any idea what makes an ECK different from an ECJ ? The book lists ECJ as 1955 Tbird and ECK as 1955 passenger car.
