Wanted to update everyone on how our rebuild is going in shop class. We've got a good pile of parts rounded up, should have everything to the machine shop this week or next. Problem is, the student taking on this build has been gone for week at an FFA convention, kinda stalled progress. May sick another student on it though so we can keep moving forward.

Cool news is another student has brought in a y-block to freshen up. He is currently grinding valves. Think his project will consist of mainly head work and a gasket kit. The shortblock us reportedly in good shape.

Gonna work on getting some pics posted, have to round up all the peripherals for our digital camera so we can post. Havent checked in to it, but can I post photobucket pics on this site? thanks-

Dan, Sounds like a great high school project.  Can't get em started too young on Y-Blocks.  If we want this Y-Block thing to stay alive you cannot rely on just us old far*s.

Where is your school?  Are you the shop teacher?  What did the Y-Blocks come come out of?  Inquiring minds want to know!

I am a retired high school math teacher qualified to teach auto shop but never did.  I always wanted to build a school race car with a Y-Block, now someone else will have to do it.

I teach auto mechanics in Miles City MT. One y-block was found in our shed (I just took over the program this year) and the other belongs to a student. The second one has hopes to swap it into an old willys p/u - not too sure about that but by the same token I dont want to quench his enthusiasm, either way it will get freshend up and hopefully run. The first one that belongs to the school we are gonna build and then?? Maybe raffle it, sell it, etc. to raise money for the program - be cool to find something like a '53-6 F100 to drop it in and make a little hot rod out of it.

We do have a '46 Merc and '27 T in the shop, both hot rods that would be pretty cool with the y-block, but those are both my own personal cars and are slated for SBC's (sorry, probably just got blackballed here for saying SBC in ford )

Yes.  For picture posting, please keep the pics at no more than 500 wide though and a hard return after each so the text does not roll off of the right side of the screen.  If you make the pics 300 wide each, then you can put them side by side with a hard return after each pair to start the next row of pics.  Because so many of the forum members are on dial-up, then the smaller picture sizes will also come up quicker.  Hope that helps.

Sounds like you have got a great Auto Shop class up there. I have fond memories of all the auto shop classes I had in Highschool, and look where it led Me ;-). The best thing to have is an enthusiastic teacher. Keep up the good work!

bump in the road, turns out our 292 pistons had some broken ring lands and a bad skirt, we'll check out our 272 pistons and see where we go from there

    If you would like another set of 292 pistons I think, I have a used set of .040"s I could give you. I'd like to know your project is making progress. Let me know if you would like them and I will check on the condition. I will need an address. You are in Mont. right?

dan. good to hear another y guy in montana.I'm in Kalispell which is only 400 miles or so from you! yeah,right next door.if you need any help or parts feel free to call me.I have a 56 customline and a 55 crown I'm restoring. have a lot of parts and engines I've accumulated. there's a 56 ford pickup in town for sale that looks really decent.could check price etc if you want.maybe the guy could donate all or part to the school.check craig's list,I've seen some good stuff around the state that is pretty reasonable. let us know your progress. wayne

if you have a 272 block that will go std. 292, I have a very nice set of std. pistons that look better than the .040 set that I have. You are welcome to either one just give me the address to send them to. You can email me direct if you don't want to put it on the forum.
