Ther was a diode in the package of screws,etc for the MSD . I found the small wire on the A attachment on the regulator installed the diode there and it now shuts off. A thousand thanks to all you guys who input info into this . I really appreciate the help. THE BIRD IS "ON THE ROAD AGAIN".  Catch Ya, thanks, Mahalo, and all that. Earl

Earl:

There are two yellow wires connected to the A terminal on the regulator.  One is large, one is small.  Put the diode in the small one.  This assuming you are still using the original wiring.

my workshop manual concur's with mark's the "A" terminal is for the gen light  on the regulator you will have an A, B & F terminal if you put your test light on all three you will find one has power even when the ignition is off  if memory serve's it will either be A or B that is live & keeps the coils in the reg energized which would cause your problem.

Hello Earl,My shop manual says wire from light socket on dash goes to the "A" or armature terminal on regulator.Hope it fixs your problem.

  

I went to the MSD forum site and presented my dilema to the MSD reps there. On older model Fords and GM cars with a voltage regulator run-on is a prominent problem.  It seems when the engine is shut off there is current going to the generator warning light and the trickle of power (thus the dim light when shut off ) goes to and keeps the box operating. All I am supposed to do is install a diode on the line to the gen light and problem is solved. Anybody know which wire on the regulator is the gen warning light?

Been a while since I worked with it but recall you can hook the ignition resistor to the wrong place on the solenoid.  Cutting off the switch will not interrupt power to the coil.

i don't think the intake or carb has anything to do with it;you are feeding back for some reason;you had no problem until you install the msd box,so that's a good place to start;if it ran good without the msd i'm wondering why you fell you need it;i'm not sure that is an advantage on a basicly stock setup;if i understnd correctly,it do not require but very low voltage to run that computer box,so you need to search out where feed back would originate and most logical point would be the charging system.i would start there.jim

I installed a set of 113 heads and a blue thunder intake and carb earlier. My friend bought the MSD for me and he and I installed the thing over the last few days until we got to this point. The car ran super before we did the msd. When it does run now it seems a bit rough. Now you know the whole story.

it seems to me you could still be getting feed back from your generator,but i,m no expert on that;you may want to try your test lite at the generator after you shut down to see if you are still getting juice at that point.it may still need a diode installed,jim
