Referring to the 56 312, if memory serves me right the 312 was only offered either in front of an automatic or in what they called the police interceptor. I think the 11" clutch would be correct for a 1956 312 because that is what is called for for the 56 P/I.

What is the clutch disk size on a '56 272 ? Anybody know? I would guess 10". I'll need one with 23 splines. I saw a Chevy T-10 the other day at Turkey Run that looked like it had 23 splines too.

The following information is from a Ford parts catalogue but interestingly enough did not find a listing for a ’56 Ford car with a 312.  Would assume it to be a 11” 10 spline clutch disk though.

1954-1957 Ford car 239/272/292 --- 10” 10 spline clutch disk.

1957 Ford car 312 --- 11” 10 spline clutch disk.

1958-1959 Ford car 292 --- 10” 23 spline clutch disk.

1955-1957 T-Bird  --- 11” 10 spline clutch disk

1954-1957 heavy duty 239/272/292 applications --- 11” 10 spline clutch disk.

1958-1959 heavy duty Y applications --- 11” 23 spline clutch disk.

Heavy duty refers to Taxi Cabs and Police Cars

When I went looking for an 11 inch clutch assembly, the local parts store had a book with clutch dimensions including teeth on the disc. Ask for a similar book. I found a perfect match. Also try a big block Mustang, just make sure the spline size and no of teeth are compatible.

If you order a clutch for a '55-57 T-Bird you should get an 11" clutch.  They all came with one.  I bought a complete clutch kit for my car, but since I don't have the original transmission the part number for the kit probably wouldn't help you.  I've got a top-loader 4-speed which has a larger input shaft than the original '57 transmission.  The clutch kit I bought was for a Ford pickup and bolted up to the T-Bird flywheel just fine.  Good luck, Nick in K.C.

If it is for a truck you are likely out of luck for finding one locally.

Royce:

Is it just a matter of cataloging?  The 11" was also used in the FE powered cars, might try asking for something like a '63 390..  If you have an original, there are shops that can rebuild it for you.  I found online yesterday that a national chain doesn't list a pan gasket for a '57 312, but lists one for a '62 292.  Catalog error, plain and simple.

I found that my local parts store no longer lists a pressure plate for a Ford 11 inch clutch in any Y Block application. Can this be? That Long type pressure plate must have been put in millions of cars. Anybody else encounter this
