I have an paypal account for buying (credit card). I do not want to give them my bank account number. When I sold, I always asked for money order or personal check and never had a problem (not a great amount of sales). I don't want to pay 2.9 % to paypal/ebay on top of the selling fees. I can handle money on my own. If they could take the amount for the sales and credit my credit card, then that would work. I can charge the buyer the fee for paypal, would note so in my ad.

A few years ago I sent a regular US postal money order to someone for parts in Canada & he could'nt cash it. He sent it back, and I had to send an International money order & I believe it cost more. Boy, it was some time getting those parts.   Somewhere, about the same year I sent a MO for  Y-parts & the guy said he never recieved it.  Payed the post office to track it & found it was signed by his name & cashed. Emailed him & he said he never recieved it & someone else must of cashed it.  Needless to say I never got the parts & was the only time I got ------d on Ebay. Thats when I decided no more MO's for me.  Paypal is the way to go, It is secure & fast.  I have recieved stuff 2 days after the auction was over.

Another point to consider is if something you bought isn't what you thought or DOA, the seller may refund your money immediatly into your account. I just had this happen.

Never answer emails that aren't in "My Ebay" messages first. The same with paypal-do not answer any suspicious emails before going back to your account..    I have also had my identity stolen about 6 or 7 yrs ago & they started selling high ticket items under my name. What a time getting out of that,Whew! did  I learned my lesson about emails.  I also bought a galaxie conv & sent my brother in Phil,PA to look at it & phoned me imediately & suspected something was wrong, by talking to the guy & where he showed him the car "in an empty parking lot"  I emailed the guy immediately & nothing added up & looked at his other cars for sale & I suspected them stolen. Turned him in & he withdrew the sale , etc

Boy, I guess I've been thru the wringer on Ebay, but I stuck with it, & have good experience with alot of good people.   

     

I think the charges are fairly inline with normal CC fees. The junk EMAIL is not from PayPal but is a spoof. Just delete it! Never go to a site from a link in an EMAIL unless you are sure it is not a fake. Type the addresss in your computer or go from a bookmark. Not from the EMAIL. A little logic will keep you safe there. I've never (knock on wood) had a problem with my PayPal account either for buying or selling. Keeps your CC information secure. My 2 bits! Chuck in NH

I'm not sure, but can't a seller say PayPal direct withdrawals only, no PayPal credit cards accepted?  Doesn't PayPal Verified mean that you are set up for direct withdrawals..thus eliminating the credit charge costs?  I have also seen sellers state that PayPal credit card charges will be passed on to the buyer.

Tom: Do I understand correctly, you sent 3 Money orders by mail to pay for parts, and they weren't cashed? If so, were they Postal Money Orders, & sent out of the U.S.A? If so, U.S. Postal Money Orders are not cashable in some countries including Canada... (from Vancouver B.C. Canada)

I had a Paypal account for about a year.On average,I would receive some kind of cockamamie message purporting to be from Paypal about my account about three times a month.The messages did not come from Paypal and I never knew where they were from.I canceled that account.If a Paypal account is required,then my E-bay buying and selling days are over.

If I read the new rules correctly, you are still allowed to solicit/accept checks & money orders only until the holiday grace period is up in Jan.



After that, even if the buyer makes an email request for alternate payment permission, they will take the same kind of action (if they catch you) they would if you tried to pitch a buyer to go around eBay and cut them out of their fees.

Last time I figured it out the cost to list,sell,and get paid with Paypal it was 15% of sale price.I think they are getting greedy and I wish there was an alternative that gets the same results.Just my 2-cents worth!

  

I try not to buy from people who do not accept paypal. 

The good ol' USPS lost 3 different money orders for Y parts.  Yes the bank credited my account but they said if the MOs are ever cashed, they will debit my account.  That was over 3 years ago and no one has cashed them - YET - but there is $1,000 hanging out there.  The buyer is not protected w/MO or cashier's check!

I have been selling and buying on ebay for 8 years. It takes a day or 2 to set up the paypal account . You have to make sure you are you and so pay pal deposits money in your account and verifies you are legit. But never do you have to accept paypal as payment. It is very convenient for me to use because you get paid immediately and can use those funds to pay for what you buy. I think its worth the money. I have bought from folks who only want money orders. All that does is delay things. If you dont mind that,then no problem. But you dont have to accept paypal as any payment.  You can specify how you want paid. Go for money orders only. Thats safe.
