I have sold on ebay, but not recently. I know they have put in some changes and thought they were minor. Today I was going to put some more items up for sale, but a ran into a thing about paypal. Can you sell without accepting paypal? There does not seem to be a way around accepting paypal. Is this correct? If not, how do you get around paypal. Thanks.

From what I understand, you must be setup to accept paypal before you can sell on ebay now.

Paul, I sell on ebay almost every week. Yes, they have changed their policy as of October. To be a seller, you must have a paypal account. However, there is no fee to have a paypal account, and you can still specify that you take money orders.

Since Paypal and Ebay are just about synonymous, it's a great way for them to get more dough from sellers when buyers use their credit card, bank account to pay. (Hence those sorry Paypal fees. I sell so much at times that I can see $75-$100 skimmed off the top because of just the paypal fees, not including what ebay does to you) But, for overseas shipping, it helps immensely, and I believe that it does make my bids go up - nothing is easier than clicking through a credit card or bank account on line.

I cannot remember the Y block issue numbers, but I have written 4 different Ebay/Y block articles for the YBM. Bruce seemed to like them anyway. If you don't have them, I can e-mail them to you.

The only way that I can afford the hobby (being 35 years old and having a family of 5, living in a bedroom community for Washington, DC) is by trading and bartering/buying and selling. Of a truth, if I did not have Ebay to use, my 55 project would slow way, way down...

I have been selling and buying on ebay for 8 years. It takes a day or 2 to set up the paypal account . You have to make sure you are you and so pay pal deposits money in your account and verifies you are legit. But never do you have to accept paypal as payment. It is very convenient for me to use because you get paid immediately and can use those funds to pay for what you buy. I think its worth the money. I have bought from folks who only want money orders. All that does is delay things. If you dont mind that, then no problem. But you dont have to accept paypal as any payment.  You can specify how you want paid. Go for money orders only. Thats safe.

I try not to buy from people who do not accept paypal.

The good ol' USPS lost 3 different money orders for Y parts.  Yes the bank credited my account but they said if the MOs are ever cashed, they will debit my account.  That was over 3 years ago and no one has cashed them - YET - but there is $1,000 hanging out there.  The buyer is not protected w/MO or cashier's check!

Last time I figured it out the cost to list, sell, and get paid with Paypal it was 15% of sale price.I think they are getting greedy and I wish there was an alternative that gets the same results.Just my 2-cents worth!

Daniel,

If I read the new rules correctly, you are still allowed to solicit/accept checks & money orders only until the holiday grace period is up in Jan.

After that, even if the buyer makes an email request for alternate payment permission, they will take the same kind of action (if they catch you) they would if you tried to pitch a buyer to go around eBay and cut them out of their fees.

I had a Paypal account for about a year.On average,I would receive some kind of cockamamie message purporting to be from Paypal about my account about three times a month. The messages did not come from Paypal and I never knew where they were from.I canceled that account. If a Paypal account is required, then my E-bay buying and selling days are over.

Tom: Do I understand correctly, you sent 3 Money orders by mail to pay for parts, and they weren't cashed? If so, were they Postal Money Orders, & sent out of the U.S.A? If so, U.S. Postal Money Orders are not cashable in some countries including Canada... (from Vancouver B.C. Canada)
