I have a 312 y block ... can you install roller rocker on it and if you can what is the advantage in doing so?

Y-Guy Greg        Welcome to the site. The "Y" shaft rockers are very

               efficient, especially for street use, if they are in good condition.

                       The roller's are better for high RPM use and I'm sure

               some of the others, on the site,will chime in and give you their

               2-cents worth.

                       It's ironic, but one of the manufactors of "Y" rollers

               is DOVE.               Hope this helps.

You can install roller rockers. They will be a higher ratio and should increase upper end power. On a stock build you probably won't feel much difference, if any at all. The roller tip will reduce friction and reduce valve guide wear. Dove, and The Rocker Arm Specialist are two companies I know of which make roller rockers for the Y.

Tim - This is one of those Y-Block "speed secrets" - I went digging through my files and found a reference note that says those are:

"Comp Cams #26915 "Beehive" springs - with #787-16 retainers. Requires trimming at the guide boss."

A couple of end users have told me they are good for several hundred extra rev's without excessive seat pressure. Beehive springs have some interesting engineering aspects - like reducing the retainer size and weight - and variable harmonics coil by coil.

No secret, they have been using "Beehive" or Conical srings on the factory stuff for years, I just haven't seen it on a "Y" yet. The retainers look like late Vortec.

Yeah - the beehives are factory in my LS1 Z but I hadn't thought about there being a selection of them available for other app's  - until Ted showed me the set-up above.

Because of what you said, less weight better revs, the US factory guys put these on most everything now. I don't see as much on the Jap stuff.
