Even with the "Spin-on" I find it a little tricky to get around my headers, but a whole lot better than a canaster. BigGrin

I made a remote adapter,,bolts direct to block, 2 lines to a filter block bolted to the early breather port. An adapter that puts a spin-on straight down from the block would make for neat oil changes.

I’ve been reforming the oil filter adapters in a hydraulic press and moving or relocating the center hole to the point that there is a 3/16” gap under it when it is layed on a flat surface.  With a gasket under it, the gap extends to a ¼” at which point I’ve had zero issues with the adapters going back to or remembering its original relaxed state.  And some of these reformed adapters are now over twenty years old and still leak free.  But I too do like the idea of a billet adapter.

And there's the new billet one available from Mummert.

While my leaking adapter problem was solved with the Walt Nuckels mod. (see: tech articles) & a thick Prestige gasket, you have to wonder if the steel adapter might relax over time and regain it's original shape? If the billet part turns out correct & bug free, the extra cost might be money well spent just to avoid the mod. hassle & possible future grief.

Once again, it happened to me.  I used Walt's method of reforming the adaptor, it held, and then not too long later it relaxed resulting in leak.  If someone had recorded the reforming episode it would have been worth a lot of chuckles.  Billet adaptor?  Hadnt heard about it but sure would like to have one.

I know they make right-angle adapters for other Ford vehicles. I wonder if you could put on a right-angle adapter and point it down so that oil doesn't spill out when you remove the filter.

Best regards,

The kits to put on a spin on appear on ebay quite often and sell for around $25. I bought my first YBlock in the early 60's and in those days we changed oil every 1000 miles which was every Saturday. It didn't take me very long to change to a spin on kit which at time was available from Ford as well as after market. I installed a kit on one of my YBlocks less than a year ago. There is a little trick to it. There is not much of a hex nut to get hold of so I grind the end of a socket flat so the hex gets a good bite on the nut. Otherwise you round the nut and then have real problems. With the kit, they are not any messier than any other spin on filter.
