I am curious about an article I read recently about Australia and don't know anyone else to ask about it,so I thought I'd ask one of the Aussie gentlemen that hang out on here. Is it true that about a year ago, the government confiscated most or all of the personal firearms of Australian civilians? And since that time the violent crime rate has skyrocketed? For example, the article says that homicides with firearms have increased 300 percent in Victoria. Is this all valid information? If so, I guess the old adage that says, When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns is proven.

Sorry about the non Y-Block post, but I don't know how else to contact any of our Aussie friends.

It doesn't seem to be true. Here is an article that came from US Time in May

I thought the article I read was probably a gross exaggeration, put out there by one of the gun-loving right-wing nuts we have so many of in this country. However, after reading the Time article, it does appear to have at least a little basis in fact.

yes what you read in the articule was true ,after the loss of all those lives at pt arther all the do gooders demaned that we should have to get rid of all the firearms.so if you had a high powered rifle or a pump action shot gun you had to hand them in.i had a winchester pump action shotgun that i had for 25 years i handed in it was still like new.

Has the firearms related crime rate increased dramatically since the guns were taken?

Paul,

What you read was true . The government had a" Buy Back " system that started in 1996 .That was the worst descion that the Howard government ever made .The old saying remains ,If guns are OUTLAW guns ,only OUTLAWS will have guns ????? The same thing happened in Italy many years ago .Now that Italy has some of the toughest gun laws in the world ,guess where you can buy guns ??? The Mafia is doing a roaring trade . The same goes her in Au .You can still buy whatever you want .The price is a lot higher now ( because they are ILLEGAL ).All you have to do is contact your local OUTLAW motorcycle gang .

Thanks for the info Ray,Moz and Lon.A lot of people in this country think that very soon, with the domination now ,of the Federal government by liberal/socialists,we are going to have the same situation here.Maybe some of our powers that be will study the results in your country and others and realize how foolish those kinds of laws are.

Thanks again!
