Here is a past thread on knurling valve guides.  For finding older discussions, use the search bar at upper top right of the page with whatever search terms you are looking for.  To find this link, I used the word ‘knurl’ in the search bar.

SUPREME  ; Knurling is an excellent method , as opposed to the expense of new guides ... Beware of getting the guides too tight , allow for some heat expansion ... I also used to Knurl worn Pistons , But than I'm Old  Smile   Please advise me how to go back a year to read the artical or some one please copy and E-mail it to me at alanb@i10net.com  Thankyou ..... After thought , can't it be re-printed on this Site ?? .... ALAN B .

At least explain to them the pros and cons. It's definitely not a preferred method for long term reliability.

Just went back and read the "valve guide knurling" post, doesnt sound like many here are big fans of the operation, oh well, we have one head done so we'll do the other - good practice for the kids even if its outdated technology, I suppose if it doesnt work we can have new guides installed later...

as for knurling, I may try that, the machinist thought they were too far gone to knurl, I do have bits and pieces of an old UTP knurler that is missing quite a few things - I will definately look at it though it might not as bad as I think, thanks for the info on the knurl. discussion, I'll look it up...

good news, just went and dug out our valve knurling stuff and its not as bad as I thought, we'll see!

Years ago when I was in college in engines lab we learned to knurle the bad valve guides. Not sure what route you want to go but just a thought.

Dan,

I can face up a set of good used valves for you, I can send Intake and Exhaust if you like. What size Intake are you using? Also I can send a set of head bolts if you like.

If you think of any other small items I can put in the same box, let me know.

Went to the machine shop today to check on some of our parts for our project. Good news is the crank is in good shape, wont need turned. Also found a starter, dont know its condition but its a start (unintentional pun Smile)

Bad news is that our heads are gonna need new valve guides and at the least new exhaust valves. The exhausts are starting to show alittle convex shape on the head of the valve. Not horrible news as I expected the valves were gonna need some attention anyhow.

Thanks for all the help and advise!
