Howdy,
Well it's easy I guess. You use a valve spring compresser and remove the "keepers". you hold the valves in place while you remove the springs and slide the old seals off and replace them with the new ones.
It's going to be difficult with the heads on the engine because you have to push something in the spark plug holes to hold(keep) each valve in place while you get the keepers/springs off from above.
I'm sure someone has done it.....I suppose you could put each piston to it's TDC so you could push on the spring from above.
That way the valve wouldn't drop very far.
I don't know which would be harder, pulling the heads and doing it right or trying to "keep" the valves in place while compressing the springs from the top and hoping you don't break something or have to chase your valve springs when they launch across the room (Or whack you in the head!!!)

If you have an air compressor spend a couple of bucks for the spark plug adapter setup. You can put air into the cylinder and keep the valves in place while you work. Chuck in NH

If you do the rope in the sparkplug hole, make sure the rope is thick enough. The one time I did it, the rope was too thin and it ended up tying a knot inside the hole, so the head came off anyway.

Also before you put the valve seals on the valve do not forget to put the plastic protector over the valve stem to prevent damaging the seal then after the seal is on take the protector off.

If you have a valve bad enough that it wont hold then your problem is bigger than seals . Chuck in NH

Merry xmas chuck, yes you,re right about valve falling into engine, would be guide that would need replacing if it was that loose and unless seal was completely gone from valve then the oil and worn seal would stop it from just falling down the cyl as everyone imagines, in 45 years and working on all ford engines i,ve never heard of a valve falling through into a cylinder. I have found by removing spring and keeping slight amount of side pressure on valve it is simple to renew stem seal, then it will hold itself in place. Obviously you need to be carefull when doing it and check the guides for excessive wear by wiggling the valve sidways etc. To all have a nice Xmas lunch and lets get ready for Easter!!!.

At work when we were rebuild the engines we used that method on all umbrella seals.
