The car trans measures 6". Is the truck Y Block trans 6 1/2" from the trans face to the end of the input shaft? Thanks

I've got a T-89 which is a truck transmission and it's 6 1/4 from the transmission to the end of the shaft.
Doing Fords for 45 years. '56 Customline Victoria

POP, mine measures 7" form end of shaft to where the bellhousing mounts to the tans and 6 1/4" to the shaft retainer.

Looks like some variables. I have a T86E OD which measures 7" and has a 1 3/8" X 10 input spline. Also has a 1 3/4" thrust bearing dia on the input bearing retainer. I have another T86 that I pulled from a 56 Ford sedan thart measures 6". I have a T85N that measures 6 1/2" that supposdely came from a 71 Ford truck. The front bearing retainer on it has a larger pilot dia but the same thrust bearing dia and input shaft spline as the sedan T86. I was told the T86E was for a 64 truck application. Looks like I need to pull the 303 out of the PU and see what I have. I really wanted to use the T85N in my truck but may have to use the weaker T86. Thanks for the help POP

I drove and abused T86 transmissions all during the 60's. Sure I had some failures, a lot of which I think I can attribute to Hurst Mystery shifters. But when it gets down to it, they were a very tough transmission. My biggest objection was there were so many combination of input shaft and cluster gear tooth count. I now have 3 56 sedans with T86 transmissions. I have a T85 that's been laying around for years, but I never have gotten around to putting into anything. The main thing is that you have the correct clutch disk. Any of the overdrives are no fun to install, especially if you have Hurst shifter linkage in the way. I wouldn't hesitate to put a T86 behind any Y-block unless it is really radical and you run it in competition.

I have another T86 in my 56 sedan. 312 with 3 x 2 carbs, G heads, isky mild cam. Been driving it for 8+ years. Did not rebuild the trans but pulled after two years and replaced the imput bearing and the needles in the cluster. I do not babie it but DO NOT speed shift. It takes the beating of a rolling kick it to the floor in 1st. When those last 2 carbs come in really put some load on the trans without any problems. So yes, I would not hesitate to put the T86 behind my stock 292 in the PU. I did buy the other car T86 as a back up for the car but I would use it too. POP
