My mistake . My post should have said 57 Mainline . I have a 56 Mainline  right  now .I checked on the engine # . AVQ 1619 was correct . All our Aussie Mainline "Utes "  from 1955 to 1959 were mounted on  a Sunliner  chassis . They were drilled for LHD & RHD steering boxes . Regards Lon.

PS . Bill ,I may have some info on engine # out of Canada .I will keep you in mind next time I go looking .

The best information I have is in the Ford of Canada 55/56/57 chassis parts book. It lists the engine prefixes. Books with Ford of Canada info is very hard to find.

Our engines are stamped the same as yours on left front face of block below deck line. Our chassis serial numbers are stamped in two places, one on the passenger side frame rail below the battery box between spring recess and front cross member heading toward front bumper horn and also on same side frame behind rear wheel hump and rear cross member. Both places have only the chassis consective number no prefixes as to model etc.

I have heard that the dies for the sheet metal were shipped from Canada to Australia after the 1956 models were completed in Canada. apparently they were quite worn out and the later sheet metal crispness was not as good as first manufactured was.
My first car was a 56 Meteor Victoria in 1962. It was an Ontario car full of rust. In those days one had to 21 to buy beverage. We would get someone of age to purchase for us then drive away to hide from you know who. If one placed the beverage case in the wrong spot in the trunk you  would hear a sickening sound of breaking glass falling through the holes in the trunk floor.

Marve, thanks for your input on our aussie numbers, its the 1st time anyone has had any info on our engine number breakdown, most of our customlines had prefixes like 55 was ASQ****, 56 was ATQ ****, 57 was AWQ****  etc, most engine numbers  were stamped on left front face of block below deck surface and along side of block behind starter motor, this engine number was also stamped on top of RH frame rail below battery area. i have seen on some of our 58 starmodel fords( look like 55 mercury ) the number stamped on top LH join of firewall. I can still remember the number of my 1st 56 ford in 1967, ATQ10134.

VQ = 272
1619 = engine serial number
CEBY is original block
CECG is a service replacement over the counter block for it.

VQ is unusual as it shows in the parts book as used in the 57 Niagara's in Canada.
VG shows as right hand drive 272 engines for 57 and TQ as 56 right hand drive 272 engine.
Was the 56 Ute a two year model (ie)built for both years 56 & 57?
Does this number match your chassis number, as I have often wondered. Most engines in Canada were exchanged for rebuilds after worn out and not many originals still exist in the cars. I have a 272 out of a 56 Niagara that is still original and stamped. Problem is someone lifted the data plate.  I could check the frame number next time I am by the parts car.

Marvh , Slightly off the subject .The engine # on my old 56 Mainline ute was AVQ 1619 .Engine block was CEBY .( Made in Canada )

To my best knowledge no retractables were built in Canada as there are no Meteor retractables. If the retractable were only USA cars imported into Canada the engine would be a USA engine.



For the Cdn engine on the front drivers side of the block just below the deck there should be two letters and a number stamped there.

For a 1956 312 the lettering would be TV####, for 57 312 lettering would be VV###

That's odd. I have an engine that I pulled from a 56 Fairlane; EDB-A with a casing date of 5BD:1. Sounds like it was a 55 292.

Thanks Ted     Just to clarify on the head dates...the first letters A B C etc become Jan, Feb, Mar. and the next letter signifies the day of the month??  I recall that the letter "I"  wasn't used to avoid confusion with the #1 ?    As for the block dates (these are Canadian engines) .....the codes are cast into the flat area just above the bellhousing to block mating surface (on the left side) ,maybe we used a different arrangement with the day of the month first ...as in 23 E 6 being the 23rd of May 1956??   A friend of mine is looking for date codes that would be appropriate for a very early '57 retractable.
