Ya, Tom is a good guy, but then, seems like all the guys on here are good guys! It is great to watch the forum and see no flame wars. I'm told that other forums are not so lucky. I belong to a forum for recumbent trikes and we have a couple of firebrands there that the place could do without. In 6 years, I only remember banning two people from posting. That is nothing short of awesome!

update. 1 head was cracked. thanks to tom compton i have a replacement for the head. great guy that went out of his way to make this a pleasant experience.

Kenny: Any proper overhaul of a V-8 is going to cost some $$. However, mainstream engines will be cheaper obviously. Since you already have the engine out & stripped down, it might be better to put it aside until you can afford to do it properly. Otherwise you will be wasting your time & money doing a unsatisfactory patch up job, that you will undoubtedly regret later.

when i decided to go yblock i wasnt aware it takes $1500 in parts for a shortblock.may have to give it the cross your fingers overhaul.grind out the ridge in the cylinder and hone. then throw some rings and bearings in it.

Hey Kenny,

another good place for parts is Dennis Carpenter, He has NOS pistons $100 a set. Gaskets pretty fair price too. If you have the time eBay will have NOS parts now and then.

Also, on the heads if you are looking for cracks, the "G" heads have a problem cracking in the center cylinders from the quench area across the seat and into the intake port. When they crack here and run for a while the cracks are easy to spot.

Macs Auto Parts, Concours Parts, Larrys Mustang and TBird. Are a few But the best I have found is John Mummert. He is the Guru of Y Blocks. Also get a HEMMINGS MOTOR NEWS and look in the car parts section after each specific year car listing. There you will find a cornucopia of parts and dealers for anything you should need . And of course go to the classified section here . You should get anything you need there.

The local O’Reilly store can get you the necessary Fel Pro gaskets to put the engine back together.  It may take them a day to get them as the parts are typically stocked at the warehouse and not at the stores.  Hard parts like pistons, bearings, camshafts, etc. can also be obtained through your local machine shop or specific Y-Block parts dealers like John Mummert and Verne Schumann.  The Best Gasket brand of gaskets can be had through the vintage car shops and John Mummert.

Don't panic yet.  I used to run these engines back in the 1960s and had trouble with the old metal headgaskets failing between the center cylinders.  It was not unusual to find water leaking in there but no crack in the heads.  It almost always happened with thin metal headgaskets.  Be sure to have the heads checked, but you may not find any cracks.
