49, here- First Y-block was in a '63 F-100 I drove in H.S. I never had to do much more than a tune up on that, and I owned it 5-6 years. It was dependable, indestructible and ran like a watch. It took me 25 years to finally start messing around with another one. My current Y project is my late parents '57 T-bird. According to my mother, I was conceived in that car I guess it could be said that it's been a part of my life since before I was born.... /Duck

Just turned 66 last week. 1st Y was while in engineering school in 1961. It was a 56 2 door Fairlane Town Sedan. 3 speed.; Loved the car but eventually sold it when I bought a 2 pump gas station. Thought wrenching was much more enjoyable than "theory engineering". That all changed when the future wife came along and stated I had better use my education if we were to marry. Kids and career took priority over "hot rods" but I stayed with Fords. Then after 20- yeas, I started dabbling again with wrenches as a hobby this time. Somehow, we ended up with 2 C**vettes (60 &77) but also have a 56 sedan full custom with 312, 3x2, 3 w/OD; 64 F100 SWB, 292, 3 speed and a 08 Grand Marquis. Retired from WORK, have a 1800 sq ft shop and can "putter" all day long. BTW, she is still with me and encourages me with my "hobby". The 77 vette is hers as is the 08 GM. Life is great!! POP

Hey fellow Y's guys I graduated from high school in '65 and that summer pumped diesel and gas at The Rebel Truck Stop, Wentzville, Mo. During that time there was "gas war" (bet the youngsters won't know what that is) and gas got down to 18.9 cents per gallon, diesel was even cheaper and if a trucker paid cash he got a discount/rebate of 2 or 3 cents per gallon. Learned to drive on the family '55 4dr Customline 272 stick with glasspacks on it. It was a surprising runner and sounded good too. At a little over 100,000 miles it started smoking and developed some engine noises. I still remember what my dad told me, "This old car is like an old horse, if you take it easy and don't run it hard it will last a good while yet". I blew it up in less then a week. Then my dad bought a very clean used '61 Ford 2 dr sedan 292 stick with a 4 bbl carb. I thought I was styling then. Now at 61 years I have a '55 Customline identical to Ted's that's been in the family since '56 with 30,000 on the 272, a nice '37 Ford Cabriolet, and more Ford trucks (1955 to 1976) then I have fingers including a couple of bbw from the '50s and a 4 door 1960 Ford pickup, yes I said 4 door, that was built by Orrville Metal Specialties, Orrville Ohio. About half of them are finished runners. Life is just pretty doggone good and I'm looking forward to getting out and meeting some of you fellow Y blockers. And John F. I will be trying to call you again. Missouri Mike

I was born in 1943. My first vehicle was a 50 GMC pickup. My second vehicle was a 56 Ford Customline. I used the same title for over 20 years, but what I drove was always the product of salvage vehicles, different Y block engines, but always an overdrive. I commuted to college daily for 5 semesters 90 miles one way, dated my wife who lived 85 miles away and took her from there to San Antonio which was another 40 miles because that is where the action was for 3 years. Used the 56 for a family car the first 10 years of our married life. Finally sold the car and all the related junk because the Hurst mystery shifter got so bad my wife had to crawl under the car to get it out of low gear. In February 1999 my wife and I flew to New York on our wedding anniversary and picked up a 56 Ford Customline I had bought through Hemmings. We drove it to Texas with very little trouble and I was equipped for the trouble we had. I now have 3 1956 Fords and all the parts to build a 4th. I had some pretty quick ones. I still have a ticket I got the first night Fredericksburg used their new radar gun. 120 on Main St. and a whopping $10 fine.

I will be 67 in August and I bought my first Y-block in 1958, it was a 1956 Customline three speed with a 272, and I dearly enjoyed it. Foolishly I sold it in 1962 and bought a scrub, mea culpa to all. Now I have another one, life is good.
