As for memories, I remember my dad putting Hollywoods on that '56 Merc of his. My mom got really ticked off at him because they made the car so "noisy". Of course, my dad, brother and I thought it was the coolest sounding thing ever. To this day, I can still remember the exact sound of that car rumbling while idling at a stoplight. I can also remember the sound of the air rushing into the carb as it got opened up with a heavy foot on the go pedal.

My dad's Merc had a gold engine with blue valve covers and blue air cleaner. He kept it neat as a pin under the hood. We'd be out there almost every weekend helping him clean the car up. I remember scrubbing the sidewalls of the tires with a rough sponge & Wesley's (just don't ever use that stuff on the wheel covers!). Smile

Alas, I don't currently own a '56 Merc. My dad had a Montclair 2-dr. hdtp when I was younger, red & white two-tone. Absolutely gorgeous car.

I'd really like to find another like it, though they go for a king's ransom these days. I can barely afford to pay the utility bill from one month to the next; I got no bidness taking on an expensive hobby car right now...Sad

Actually, I'd be perfectly happy with a '56 sedan or wagon. Wouldn't matter to me. The '54s also intrigue me, with the first year Y-block under the hood.

I found this gem awhile back. Lots of time & money in it:

Great sites guys-they are now in "my favorites".    No 54 Mercs in there though...... Poly318 got a good picture of your Merc to post on here?   When I was young in the late 50's, a neighbor down the street from me had a 56 Merc convertible, Red w/ white top with white Interior with Cruiser skirts & dual exhausts for that Y.  What a car !! If I could have one from those days it would have been that one!! He ended up totaling that beauty. This is the one that I remember first of my younger days & my family always had GM's.

Hey lets hear some more "memories" from the 50's or 60's cars !!!

Wow! Glad I didn't try to load the page with a dial up connection...BigGrin

Here's one of my favorite sites. It features online versions of old sales brochures, owners manuals and shop manuals:

I spend a lot of time at this one:
