could be anything from exhaust leak, piston slap to a loose bolt somewhere, hard to diagnose a noise problem over the internet

Moz: Has this just started right after an oil filter change? Some screw-on filters don't have an anti drain valve, so when you start the engine it takes a little longer to build full oil pressure because the filter is empty, and a main bearing may let you know about it.

Moz, you havent got one of those Rare Auto trans mainlines, my 1st thought was flexplate problem as just suggested, but if not, are you moving your head from side to side? He He! regards aussie bill.

I would check the oil pressure by removinging the oil sender unit and hooking up a external line whith a gauge on it so when you have someone start the car you can see the oil pressure. If it climbs slow it could be a weak oil pump.

Moz , Auto or manual ?? I tend to agree with 56fairlane & Cusso Bill .Had a bad noise in the Hot Rod . Got to the stage where Lynne refused to drive it .Went ahead and had a spare 272 rebuilt to install in the Rod ,to keep "She ,who must be obeyed " happy . Turned out to be broken ears on the flexplate .Now I still have a good 272 as a spare motor .Also had a bad bush in a dizzy once .That sure did scream .Took ages to find as it would only make a noise for a split second ,then stop . Moz, thanks for all the replies to the guys, even with the full flexplate ,would be worth running spanner over the converter nuts. Or just keep driving till something falls off or gets more consistent. OH,! check in the back for loose paint can . regards aussie bill.

well after going over everything & finding nothing loose or cracked i got it to happen while i was under it i was on the right side when it happened & it sounded like it was in the auto then i went to the left side grabbed the throttle control rod & pulled it down untill the revs got to where the noise comes in between 1500-2000 rpm all of a sudden there was a sharp metalic banging noise but not in the auto the noise was on my right i turned my head & there it was the muffler banging away as loud as anything its done a baffle the amazing thing is its only done 11000 miles i had a mechanic mate listen & he said in 30 years he's never heard a muffler make that noise i guess they dont make things like they used to.
