ibuzzard:

Does your bellhousing have mounting ears for the rear engine mounts, or is the rear mount on a crossmember under the trans?  If it's on a crossmember, passenger car bellhousings will work.  Then you don't need a truck bellhousing.  The three transmissions should all cost about the same at a salvage yard, unless the guy thinks the old FOM is made of gold.  Some folks on ebay seem to think so.  The FMX is probably more common today.  They will all three bolt to the Y bellhousings.

John, thanks for the info.Which of those three trannys I chose is probably going to boil down to which one I can most readily find as well as the costs.Cost isn't the most limiting factor though.I will save my pennies, collect the items over time and refurbish them as needed.I do like to shop wisely, but doing it only once is my main concern.

Cost -wise,are there big differences between the three, both rebuilding and buying the parts you mentioned? Most truck guys are going to consider themselves lucky to have the factory automatic, and won't be interested in a trade,I believe.Again, thanks for any help or advice

The swap to FOM would be a bolt in.  Maybe you can hook up with someone who wants to go from FOM to a 4 speed and swap parts without swapping much money.  If you end up buying individual parts for the swap, you may as well go for the FMX tranny and the FOM bellhousing, flywheel, converter, and front pump and go from there.  You need to decide which way you are going to go, then we can advise.

Sorry to continually rehash this subject. In order to pacify my Chief FinancialI Officer,I want to use a tranny that will bolt right up, without an adapter,to my 292.I need to find a rebuildable FOM.COM,or (am I correct?) FMX.I realize the advantages of several other automatics, but this is my (possibly unwise) decision.

Beside fabricating mounts, changing driveshaft lengths, fabricating linkage(2 barrel Holley),what all steps do I need to take.I want to start gathering all the parts now,as I find good deals. The current transmission is a 4 speed manual.Has anyone done this same swap, and can maybe walk me through it?My apologies in advance for my ignorance, but I don't want to screw things up,or spend more money than I have to.

Right now,I am doing brake improvements.Next will be the auto tranny swap, then finally adding power assist steering.Trying to stay Ford. Thanks,Steve
