There is a spring loaded park pawl that engage teeth in the trans, sounds as if the spring maybe weak or broken or the pawl itself could be worn or the part that engages the teeth could be broken. Or what John said above, the easy place to start looking first.

sounds like your shift linkage needs adjusting.

Hi guys. I have a 57 bird with a Fordomatic Tranny. The tranny works great with nice smooth shifting. I had something strange happen and was curious if anyone has experienced this. I put the shifter into Park and left the car in a lot. Apparently the shifter had not locked into Park to keep the car from rolling. When I jumped into the car, the car started rolling back immediately. It almost felt as if the locking mechanism was in between teeth. As the car rolled back I could hear the locking mechanism riding over the teeth that lock the tranny. It is the first time it has happened since I have owned the car and has happened one more time since. I now let the car roll a bit if it doesn’t lock the first time. As a note on very rare occasion (1 out of 30 times) I can tell you that sometimes when I shifted the car into Park I would hear a short almost grinding noise that would last a split second. I now turn off the car before I put it into Park as a precaution. I would think it is probably related.

Thanks
