Fellas- The fun never ends; Today I went to get an expansion plug to use in the hole in the head (rear) across from the water temp sending unit. The brain trust at my local NAPA informed me that no, I need 4 plugs in the heads, not just one. They also told me the size of these plugs was 1.788, which I recognize as the size plugs for the block. I stood there repeating myself until the counter person told me I didn't know what I was talking about, at which point I left empty-handed. I had nearly the same experience across town at the Carquest store.Would someone happen to know the correct size of the plug, so I can try it that way tomorrow? Maybe I'll have better luck doing it that way... Thanks, /Duck

Kenny- Been there, done that. Finally got sick of it all and ended up sending the pump I had to Cardone for a rebuild. $92.00 later I am a much wiser (albeit, poorer) man.... -Good Luck- /Duck

Yep! It goes on the back of the engine. I installed brass. Here's a picture:

Duck: Hopefully your head isn't corroded badly at the opening. According to John Mummert, he has seen heads that won't hold a plug..

Kenny: Actually, in the mid 70s I did work at NAPA as the machinist. That was when they had catalogs. You know, paper books with printing in them. No screens or keyboards. Mixture of older guys and young guys, and the older experienced guys helping the young guys when they hit a snag. I still have a couple of their catalogs, that's where I come up with part numbers. I am no longer associated with NAPA, and am not pushing their parts, though I do use them myself. Some of the other stores can cross over the NAPA numbers for you.

I always provide the part numbers. Just go to their website, look up the parts, write down the numbers. They usually have a picture of the part, too. I've never had a problem doing it this way. If I do, I'll know, without a doubt, who to blame.
