ok i know its not a yblock  but i just bought a bigblock today  the guy told me he thinks its a 460 or a 429 he said it could be a 428 (i dont think so)  we both looked the engine over and the only numbers we could find on it were B9VE-B  are these the numbers i need  to determin what i have? hopefully this engine will be going in my 57 any help is appreciated

does anyone know if there is a websit that can decode engine stampings?

***********************************************************************

its been awhile since i posted this  but i finnally got the engine tonight and once i got it out in the sunlight i checked the number on the block and i made a mistake the number is C9VE-B  and i took some pics of it and the heads  here is the link

http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLanding.action?c=b2ouskar.8774c5vn&x=0&h=1&y=y9xnrr&localeid=en_US

i think some one posted on here that the earliest 429/460 would have a number that started C8  so i hope this means its is a 429/460

also i found a number inside where the trans would mount it appears to say 460 does that mean anything ?

i tried to take a pic of the number on the side of the engine after i cleaned it up

B9VE looks like a '59 Lincoln number.  That would make it a 430, I think.

Is the block all you got? If the pistons are in it you can tell if it's a 383/430. The combustion chamber is in the cylinder instead of the head. I would think you could tell a 390/428 from a 460/429. The FE are a Y block looking motor, the 429/460's aren't. I would guess the numbers would tell you for sure what was.

ok guys  i got the block, heads and crank rods/pistons and oilpan  the heads are wider then a 428 pushrods go through the heads instead of the intake  the combustion chamber is in the heads not the block the block is not what id call deep skirted

i wont have any pics of it until this weekend

this engine was caught in a flood the piston and lifters are stuck in the block so i may not be able to use it anyway  no i didnt pay alot for it

the guy i got it from said that a aluminum 460 intake bolted straight on to the engine

Looking at the heads it looks like a 460 to me. As I recall the FE series had shaft mounted rockers.

That's probably a 429 or 460.It's not an  FE or Windsor because it has staggered valves and individual rockers.FE's used shaft mounted rockers and Windsors have inline valves.

C9VE, it's a 429, look at the heads and see if they are also c9ve. Looking at the valve reliefs in the piston makes it a 10.6:1 comp ratio. c9ve and d0ve heads were quite popular with the racers as they were easy to make "counterfeit" Cobra Jet heads instead of trying to find the high dollar 429 Cobra Jet heads. I have a 69 429 with the c9ve heads and put in a 460 crank and pistons and made a 466 out of it with a .040 over bore. Edelbrock hi rise, Motorsport roller rockers, Doug Thorley tri-y headers 2.25 intake and 1.75 ex hard seats etc. etc. It has GOBS of torque about 550 ft lbs at 3000 rpm. It will pass anything on the road but a gas station and drinks 93 octane. "OUCH". Have to use the "tall trannys behind em like the 400s and 351 clevelands.  It's in a 1986 F-150 supercab with a facory 9 incher.

But I'd rather have a Y-Block!!!!
