Guys:

Got a reply to my recent letter to Karol today.  He is apparently still doing well and enjoying his retirement years.

He sent me a copy of the '64 Bonneville results.  High winds allowed only a few record runs.  His class got a new record, 159.221.  He qualified, but didn't get to make any record runs.  His qualifying time was 159.574.  Not a Y block though.  Mustang HiPo 289 with an Isky roller and Hilborn.  It was his last run on the salt.  I had never heard of his running at this meet before.  Oh, the record for the next higher class was set at 153.141.  Shades of the old days!  My HERO!!!

Last weekend he flew to a car show and back on the same day.  He's planning a trip halfway around the world to look at some old railroads.  He's a railroad buff too.  Guess he still gets around OK.

Hey John ,

I'm with you. One of my favorite photos (in my posession) is of Karol Miller's 56 Victoria. License plate "ETJ 56". The other is a time slip (Copy) from Daytona Beach.

"This is to certify that Karol Miller drove a 1956 Ford Victoria through the "Famous Measured Mile" for an average of 155.844 Miles per hour, as recored and checked by NASCAR officials dated Feb 11 1958"

You sure must be honored to know the man personally. I still think they should make a movie about him, "Worlds Fastest Y-Block"

Regards

Lon

I agree with you lon, karol miller was and is a great racer.would love to meet him someday.a few weeks back,I watched the movie "the worlds fastest Indian" and loved it.there are similarities between him and the great Bob ST lawrence with his y powered Saint Train.just had to get out the past issues of yblock magazine and reread the article on him.If it wasn't for this forum and yblock magazine, few of us would have known the accomplishments of Karol or Bob.I have a lot of admiration for you guys "down under" that had to fabricate and make due with what you had.it's pretty easy for the bowtie bozos to buy everthing to make HP now days.

Karol was MY hero. I wonder if he is aware of how many Ford loving, adolescent shade-tree failures he encouraged back in the late 50s with his determination and ingenuity?

Chuck:

No, that was Akton Miller, another 50 year ago hot rodder.  Karol was a Bonneville and Daytona racer who constantly amazed everyone who saw him run.  Made the Y Block do things that even the Hot Rod Magazine "experts" couldn't believe.  When he won the C/G class at Bonneville in '57, he ran faster than the next two higher classes did.  Scrubs, Chryslers, Olds, he didn't care.  Just whupped 'em.
