Hi,

I am new to this forum. I am also new to Y Blocks. I purchased a 54 2 door ranch wagon about a month ago. It has a 272 Y block with a 3 on the tree trans. The guy I bought it from also gave me a Ford top loader trans with the car that he had planned on installing. I am trying to determine what the trans is from and if it would be suitable to use in this car. Here are the numbers from the I D Tag on the trans. Does anyone have any idea what it is from? Is it a 3 speed overdrive or a 4 speed?

RUG FD ED26

E2 TR BB 0448

Input Shaft - 1 1/16" / 10 spline

Output Shaft - 1 3/16" / 28 spline

If this is a good option, how hard would it be to adapt it to my Y block?

Thanks. 54FordWagon

Welcome. I can't help on the ID of the trans. I have a 54 (Victoria) and put a top loader (4 speed) in it. Pretty easy swap if you have the right case, the worst thing for me was cutting the shifter hole in an otherwise pristine floor.

I am sure some one will id the trans for you.

Thank You Everyone. It looks like it may be a 4 speed with overdrive. I am going to do a little more searching.

I put one of those 3-speed overdrive transmissions in a 1966 mustang 6-cyl car.  I really liked it, the three normal ratios were comperable to the stock 3-speed, and overdrive shaved more than 500 rpm off cruising speed.  I had a small tach in that car and it was under 2500 rpm at 70mph, not bad at all!  Used to be around 3k.

It seems as though mose people frown upon these units, but I appreciate their simplicity and frugality.
