Yes there it was, an add at the top of the list for a rebuilt C-4 trans., free.  Called the guy and drove to his place 40 mi. away.  He said it was rebuilt some years ago and had been in the back room ever since.  He was trying to clear out some things, which definitely needed done.  A path had to be made to get to the trans.  Included was the bell and torque converter.  Seals look new and paint is new.  Everything shiny clean.  It has 11 mounting cap screws in the oil pan, so that and the pan's shape seem to indicate it to be a C-4.  No tag so dont know the year yet.  The dipstick is in the pan.

Cereal Killer,  Thankyou very much for the link.  There is a lot to digest there.  I did notice that later model cases have a mushroom style vent on top of the tail shaft housing, which matches the vent of this trans.

Will do.  I had written all that down on a note already to check tomorrow.  Hope the bell is a 5 bolt unit, since they are hard to find according to the article, and I wouldnt need it.  Maybe a good ebay item.  Dont know much of anything about automatics, so this is new.  The torque converter had some minor surface rust on the outside.  When I took it off its collar to input shaft looked like it had a fresh new weld to the circular assembly.  Maybe it is a new TC?

This is what I've found so far:  Input shaft is .839 with 26/24 splines, Bell is a 6 bolt and casting number still not sure about, as it is really hard to read.  Also need to have bell off to get a good depth measurement.  On a shift lever there is D5DPAA.  Tailshaft is D4ZP.  Right side cover "A" C6AP.  The top of the trans. case has a big 29A, but no other casting numbers as indicated in the article.  Inside the bell on the front of what it bolts to (with 7  bolts) is RFC4AP.  Oil fill into pan.
