The original FOMs started in second in D but when did they change them to start out in first in drive,I am planning on installing a FMX but does anyone know if the 61 and 62 COM has the green dot like my 65 galaxies did.  Those trans when put in the big green dot would start out in first but you cant do up and down shifts like on the 67 and newer trans.   I dont know what would be easier,a valve body change or adapt the FMX and then there is the parts availability of the COMs verses the FMX.

It seems like its setup similar to the 64 to 66s and I think I can put a FMX valve body in it so it will start out in 1st on the first spot after neutral, whatever I put in must do that since the 55 has only D and L and I cant down shift into low with the C-4 since it has only 2 spots for gears in the shifter without doing some serious modifications to the column.

Jeff:

You can put the FMX valve body in the FOM, but you also have to change the detent (sometimes called a "rooster comb"), and drill and tap the back of the case for the vacuum modulator.

When was the first year for the vacumn modulator valve,I dont want to mess with the linkage on the FOMs and it starting to look like I should just do whats needed for the FMX swap

COM got the modulator in the early '60s, maybe when the two dot drive position indicator showed up.  All FMX had modulators as far as I know.

IN 1958 THEY FORD CAME OUT WITH THE 'CRUISE-O-MATIC'--THIS TRANS SHIFTED IN FIST OFF THE LINE TO SECOND AND THIRD----Y-BLOCKS HAD THIS TRANS 1958 TO 1962- (LAST YEAR FOR Y-BLOCK IN PASS CARS)SO, TRY TO FIND A 61 OR 62 IF YOU CAN--THEY HAVE THE COOL VAC - MODULATER--YOU ALSO NEED THE FLEXPLATE AND STARTER FROM A Y-BLOCK AUTO--AND DRIVESHAFT AS FRONT YOKE IS LARGER ON THE CRUISE-O'S--FAB THE KICKDOWN LINKAGE AS EACH CONVERSION WILL BE DIFFERENT--WATCH OUT FOR CRANK PILOT HOLE NOT MATCHING 62 CONVERTER PILOT--NOT ALL Y-BLOCK CRANKS HAVE THE SAME I. D. HOLE.--ALSO MUST PLUMB COOLING LINES TO A COOLER IN BACK OF GRILL---LASTLY --RUN VAC LINE FOR MODULATER--BYE ED

I will see if I can find a 61 or 62 COM and does anyone know if the modulator is in the same spot as a FMX as I would like to put a FMX valve body in it so it will start out in first on the first spot after neutral,I still dont know why on the COMs with the 2 dot system D is where 2 is usually at.
