Some y block articles in the past reccomended smoothing with a grinder & chamfering the actual hole a bit. Does this provide any help at least in prevention of build up?

Maybe? But with modern detergent oils & the attentive service intervals given to classics, how would you prove it?

I swear the 50s sludge I inherited with my original engine has actually dissipated over the years.
