Re: what Ted said. The water will run toward the back of the engine. When you're driving it, heat from the motor and air flow will evaporate the water before it gets there. When you shut it off, the engine cools and radiator pressure will still cause it to leak.

Be sure to check the center intake manifold studs where they go into the heads and especially if you have the original early model heads on the engine. The threaded holes in some of those heads for the intake studs are open to the water jacket and are known to seep coolant if sealer was not put on the threads upon putting the studs or bolts back into the heads at these locations. That particular seep is easily mistaken for a leaking head gasket. The later model heads went to a blind hole design in those particular holes which alleviates that problem.

If it gets to a cylinder you will see white smoke or steam out the exhaust. Sometimes you may not see it but you may smell antifreeze in the exhaust.

It will start runnin like crap.If you dont have a lumpy cam then it suddenly sound like you do.It will also sometimes pop thru the exaust or carb, and leak water into the oil.IF suddenly the water level is down and the oil level is up.The water will sit at the bottom of the pan so alot of times you wont even notice it when you pull the dip stick.

Engine runs very hot, bubbles in coolant with red cap off (do it cold) possible oil in coolant or coolant in the oil.
