Had a '63 Galaxie 406 11" clutch in my 312 for years. Replaced it with a replacement 11" diaphram clutch and throwout bearing for a 390 pick up truck. A lot less pedal pressure and works great. Reasonable price.

When I replaced the 11" clutch in my '57 Tbird a while back I just went to my local auto parts store and bought a new replacement diaphram clutch and throwout bearing for a 390 Ford 1/2 ton pick up truck. Works great and pedal effort is a whole lot less than the '63 406 Galaxie clutch that I had been running since 1965.

The truck t.o. bearing will not work with the diaphragm pressure plate, or an original car Long pressure plate. The truck p.p. has shorter levers for the bigger bearing. The diaphragm p.p. is totally compatible with a car throwout bearing.

For the T-5 conversion in trucks we made a t.o. bearing that fits the truck clutch fork, fits a car transmission and car pressure plate. This is only necessary if you are using the truck bellhousing, which uses a totally different clutch fork than a car.

The truck disc is also much thicker than a car disc so you can't simply use a truck p.p. with the new T-5 type clutch disc. It won't clamp properly.

Hey charlie, are you using Mummert's special throw-out bearing with the Centerforce diaphragm clutch?

The clutch I'm using is actually for an 80s mustang and will not bolt in the place of an 11" long clutch. The part number is DF021048.

I think DF700000 will work in the place of an 11" long plate but please check with Centerforce before you order one. It is an 11", 1 1/16 - 10 spline clutch. One of it's application is F100 - F550, 1965 - 1977 with 300 I6, 352 and 358 V8. I believe those would have been equipped with an 11" long plate originally. This clutch also fits many other Fords.

Gary may know the answer to this.

Y-Guy Charlie:        I've sold Centerforce clutches, for years, when I was

in the 4x4 business. Do you have a record of the part number(s)

you used. I've got a T-5 same as you, so it should work!

                                               Thanks Bill

A car should already have a bearing appropriately sized to work with a diaphragm plate. It is the trucks, with the larger input shaft, that will have a problem.

Bill,

I only know one of the answers to yourthree questions. Yes, the diaphragm type will work, I use oneand purchased from JohnMummert. It is for an 11 inch clutch but it requires a smaller diameter throw-out bearing surface to make correct contact with the pressure plate fingers. If my memory serves me right (I keep my fingers crossed a lot) it was all mustang.

This alarms me. J. Mummert is installing 11" diaphragm clutch on my stroker shortblock, and has assured me it will bolt right in to my '55 without throw-out bearing alteration. JOHN...???

Y-Guys Are all "long" style pressure plates the same?

Nope. But an 11" should bolt in place of another 11". The same goes for 10". The fingers can have a different spread, depending on the input shaft size and/or throwout bearing for the application.

Will a diaphram type work and hold 350/400 ft.lbs. torque?

The right one will. Here again, they are not all the same. I'm sure some are made which will mount in the place of the long plate. If this is for your turbo truck, I suggest that you look at the Centerforce Dual Friction. I'm loving mine so far. The pedal effort is no more than it was stock.
