Has anyone used one of the small hand held steam cleaners like McCullouch etc? I'm wondering if they will get the job done for an engine cleanup. Chuck in NH

I have never used one, but unless you are just trying to clean up fresh oil leaks, I'm afraid it wouldn't meet your expectations. I think there is just no substitute for a pressure washer.

this is one of my areas of expertise steam cleaners arent that good i detail engines every day all i use is degreaser & an 110bar(1600psi) pressure cleaner & they look like new.

The do it yourself car wash engine cleaner spray and high preassure rinse works pretty well...but if your engine is out of the car, that is another story.

Used steam cleaner a lot back in the mid-60s army. It was fast & thorough (no degreaser required). Unfortunately, it also lifts paint and ruins electronics.

Beleive it or not the best way to clean the engines that I have found is to use one of those small portable sandblasting guns, The quart cup type. Put a hose on the siphon of the gun and stick it in a container of Kero, diesel etc. Put a piece of old carpet or cardboard on the ground. Blast the crap out of it while blowing off with air occaisionally and then the last rinse stick the hose in some thinner and then blow dry. Take the cardboard or carpet and start your bonfire that evening.
