I've pulled the engine and trans, gutted the interior of the 55 victoria and dropped it at the body shop last weekend.  So while that is getting done, it is time for me to do the engine and trans.

As I had posted before, the previous owner had put a 54 Merc 256 engine in it, that will be replaced by a 292.  I looked at the code on the trans.  If I read it correctly it is a 1P 7003J, a small case fordomatic.  Reference tells me that this code indicates it came behind a 239, pre 1955.  Are there any problems putting this behind a 292?  Is there anything I should know about this type trans, could it also have been a replacement?

Thanks in advance

It proabably has 1 fewer plate in each of the clutch stacks, possibly a narrower front band, but should not be a problem for everyday driving.

Thank you John.

The car will be used on street, but some trips will be taken.  For example, I travel Rt 66 every summer so I would like to have it on the road.  It would be no problem to find another, if that should be a common recommendation.  I'd rather do it now than later if I should need to.

If you do some traveling, think about an AOD trans.

Personally, if I was in your shoes I would seriously think about going to a C-4 if an AOD is something you don't want to get into.

Thank you Paul for the reply,

The C4 was something I'd been thinking about. I didn't want to stray far from era drivetrain, the OD would be nice but not sure about it.
