I have heard good of old rotella stock for diesel and cars..30w has plenty of it. new stock that meets the new regulations doesnt have the required zinc.

If it aint broke, lets modify it!

For the 'Zinc' (Zinc diaryl-dithiophosphate, aka ZDDP) I use STP Oil Treatment for 4 cylinder engines (red bottle). For the oil, I use Mobil 10w-30 or Mobil1.

I don't use Fram oil filters. I use Purolator PurOne, Motorcraft, NAPA, Mobil1, Bosch, or Wix filters.

Do a forum search on oil and on ZDDP.

Best regards,

good morning every body

i  browse this website at least once a week and i love it but but i'm not normally bold enough to stick my neck out

as i'm new to the world of "Y"

for info and comment please, in July and September editions of "Classic Trucks" there are adverts for AMSOIL 10w-40

and 20w-50 with high zinc and phos content for flat tappets. i've seen Amsoil over here in the UK

regards     stuey

There has been much discussion about lubricants in the past. One of my businesses is selling lubricants. One of the things that I have not seen mentioned is that oils are constantly being reformulated. The requirements by 2007 Diesels are to keep ash out of the particulate filter. Zinc is one of the elements that creates ash when burned. Lubricant companies are constantly trying to develop anti wear properties without zinc. Many people are satisfied to use Diesel lubricants now and I don't want to enter into a lengthy discussion about that. However, I think we must all prepare ourselves for Diesel lubricants not having enough zinc to lubricate flat tappet cams. Current development of Diesel lubricants makes the assumption that it will be used in engines with roller cam followers.

Rotella T heavy duty SAE 15W-40

Gasoline engines listed on jug.

Shell wrote back to me saying "yes, it can be used in older engines...including flat tappet engines"

Try and find the Compcam article about flat tappet engines....they suggest Rottella T 15w-40.

Yes the amount of zinc is less in the newer triple protection Rotella T but it is still up in the thousands.
