Time to rebuild the trans in my '57 Ranchero. I need help with a couple of questions.

1. How do I identify the trans? The Ranchero was originally a 3 speed manual but was converted by a previous owner

to the Ford-O-Matic.

2. Can the Ford-O-Matic be built up to handle a pretty strong 312?

3. Any suggestions on a transmission shop in the Seattle area or in Western Washington State.

Thanks for your help

Karl:

I can help with 2 of your questions.  On the side of the case, driver's side, aft of the shift lever, there should be an oval shaped aluminum plate riveted on.  The letters/numbers on that plate ID the trans.

As for reliability, I ran a FOM, upgraded with some FMX parts, for several years on the dragstrip behind my Paxton blown '57 Fairlane, running in the mid 12 second range at about 110 mph.  Finally felt sorry for it and replaced it with an FMX, still running it.  Never broke either one.

Someone in your area will have to recommend a shop for you.
