hi guys, got the 3 deuce 32 running, now have to solve another problem. because of the steering box, cannot use the sidedraft tube.(didnt want to anyway). understand ford used 3 different setups for the yblocks. would prefer to use one that would recycle gases back thru the engine, other than the one that vents off the back of the engine. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

I ended up with a PCV type intake. The back end of the valley pan has an opening for a vent. It has the baffle to prevent oil from getting sucked in. It is plumbed to the intake through a PCV valve. On the intake, right ahead of the carb mounting flange is a circular flat spot that's tilted to the passenger side of the engine. On most intakes it's not drilled out, but on this intake I have it's drilled and tapped and it connects to both sides of the intake plenum.



Anyway, it's what I'm going to use on my Y-blocks.

The 63/64 light truck engines have a neat factory pvc system that works very well. It hooks into the back of the valley pan and has a formed metal tube that runs along the pass side valve cover, then to a valve screwed into the manifold just forward of the carb. I have this setup on my 62 F100 and it works great. The valve is still available from local parts stores. I don't know if it could be adapted to a tri-duce setup or not, but if there is a port drilled or a place to drill one, I see no reason that it would not work.

thanks for the tip. using an edelbrock 3 duece mainifold and it does have an open port between the front and middle carb. maybe i can pipe into this.

The "factory" Ford solution to providing the PCV port - and I'm thinking of the late 60's four barrel cars in particular - was to put a spacer under the carb base with a tube connection for the PCV. Can you put a spacer under the three carbs - say 5/8 thick - and then run a steel tube out the back of the center carb? I think I've actually seen one before that had the center carb elevated - mostly for effect.... probably a sbc.

The valley pan on my bird - its the one for the original 56 four barrel engine at this date - has a port at the rear for the road draft tube. I put grommet in the hole, then built a 90° fitting that bolts down there to hold the PCV valve. The rubber tube then runs around behind the distributor, inboard of the right hand valve cover and goes into the side PCV port of the four barrel Holley 4160 carb.

At least you won't have modify your manifold permanently.

I'm running 3 x 2 on my 54 with a PCV. I made up some aluminum spacers for the three carbs, 1 inch (probably too high,- think i could have gotten away with 3/4 or 5/8) Drilled a hole in the middle one (angled to go into both holes) for a fitting and ran the tube from the back of the valley cover (old draft tube hole) to the fitting under the carb.

thanks guys for all the help. how about using the tapped port on the edelbrock manifold between the first two carbs. would that work?

The tapped port between the carbs would be a good place to hook up your PCV.  You might double check that the port does intersect with both runners so you don’t get a ‘pulsing’ vacuum signal.

 

I also ran a PCV valve with the 3X2 setup on my ’55.  I used a hole saw on the valley pan at its back to accommodate a grommet that would hold a PCV valve and plumbed this to the common runner vacuum port that was already on the intake.  I already had electric wipers on my ’55 so having a vacuum line specific to the windshield wipers was not an issue.  To add to what everyone else has said, here’s some links to threads regarding the subject on the old forum.  There is quite a bit of PCV info on the old forum if a search is ran.

I am putting a Blue Thunder/Demon on my bird and am seriously considering removal of the road draft. Could you post a pic of your PCV setup? It would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my home made elbow for all who care - bet there's a ready made set of parts somewhere- I just don't know where to find them!

It's made out of a copper water plumbing "T", big flat washer for the bottom flange, silver solder, and various rubber pieces from who knows where. Need to get back working steadily on this thing - my wife says its becoming a "redneck" garage ornament.
